ObjectiveTo evaluate the efficacy, tolerance and safety of moxonidine on aged patients with mild to moderate essential hypertension. MethodsThirtyone patients over seventy with mild to moderate essential hypertension were given moxonidine orally, 0.2-0.4 mg, qd, for 8 weeks. Systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), heart rate and blood glucose of the patients before the treatment and at 1, 2, 4 and 8 wk were tested, and the serum level of K+, Na+, BUN, Cr, AST and ALT before and after the treatment were measured. ResultsThe SBP, DBP and heart rate declined remarkably after 1, 2, 4 and 8 wk. The level of K+, Na+, BUN, Cr, AST, ALT and serum glucose have no significant difference before and after the treatment. The total efficacy rate of moxonidine was 91.7%. Moxonidine had long therapeutic effect with good tolerance. Only one patient had adverse reaction. ConclusionMoxonidine has certain antihypertive effect and good safety on aged patients with mild to moderate essential hypertension.
