Objective:To evaluate the effect of Mitomycin (MMC) and 5Fluorourail (5Fu) in the excision of recurrent pterygium. Methods:48 patients with recurrent pterygium were randomly devided into 3 groups. Excision of recurrent pterygium was performed for each case. Patients in group A experienced no additional treatment. A single 5 minute intraoperative exposure of the excision wound surface to a piece of cotton soaked with MMC(0.2% mg8226;mL1) was made during the surgery for each of the patients in group B and group C. Each patient of group C was subjected to a subconjunctival injection of 5Fu (5 mg) on the 2nd, 4th, 6thand 8th day after the surgery. Patients in all 3 groups were followed up for 12~24 months. Results:The rates of pterygium recurrence were 60.0%, 25% and 0% in groups A,B and C, respectively. Differences between any two of these groups were significant (P<0.01). The times of corneal epithelial healing were 2.87±1.2, 4.12±0.9 and 4.30±0.90 days in groups A,B and C, respectively. Differences between group A and group B, and between group A and group C, were significant (P<0.01). The difference between group B and group C, however, was not significant(P>0.05). The times of conjunctival wound healing were 6.78±1.75, 11.23±0.87 and 13.69±1.75 days in groups A, B and C, respectively. Differences between any two of the three groups were significant (P<0.01).Conclusion:Combined application of MMC and 5Fu is capable of improving the rate of success in the surgery of recurrent pterygium.
